Vaxdigm, a company specialising in bio research and development, announced on the 14th that it has been finally selected as the lead research and development institution in the 2025 Seoul-type R&D bio and medical technology commercialisation support programme, organised by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and operated by the Seoul Business Agency (SBA).
The project will be carried out with a total budget of KRW 530 million (of which government funding is about KRW 400 million), aiming at the 'derivation of mid-sized molecule drug candidates using AI (artificial intelligence) and development of an NC-LS fusion structure-based delivery platform process'. It focuses on exploring a variety of advanced biomaterial candidates using AI technology and building a new delivery platform.
Kim Sung-jae, CEO of Vaxdigm, explained, "NC (nucleocapsid protein), to which Vaxdigm's source technology Chaperna is applied, is a capsid protein that binds to target proteins and has excellent antigenicity and stability," adding, "LS (lumazine synthase) is an enzyme involved in a specific metabolic pathway and a protein with excellent self-assembly properties, and fusing these two proteins makes it possible to realise a water-soluble particle-type delivery vehicle."
Chaperna, Vaxdigm's core technology, is a proprietary source technology using microorganisms (E. coli) and an innovative production platform capable of rapidly producing peptides and proteins at the lowest cost. It synthesises complex proteins with high efficiency and high quality while simplifying production processes and reducing costs.
These technological capabilities can also be applied to developing advanced biomaterials based on functional peptides and proteins such as GLP-1 and growth factors, allowing the company to expand its business into the pharmaceutical, medical device, functional cosmetics and health functional food materials markets. Through this project, Vaxdigm plans to incorporate AI technology to rapidly explore and select candidates, and to build an NC-LS fusion-based self-assembling delivery platform through to the production process for the first time in Korea.
In particular, this research will be conducted as an industry-academia joint cooperation system with Fobio Korea and the Research and Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Sungshin Women's University. Fobio Korea will handle AI-based target discovery and validation for mid-sized molecule drugs, while the Sungshin Women's University foundation will handle NC-LS-based water-soluble self-assembling particle structure technology and efficacy evaluation. Building on this, Vaxdigm plans to pursue the creation of cell lines for mid-sized molecule drug production and the standardisation of quality evaluation methods.
